In second place for a third consecutive year is Peter Ward of Barclays Capital. “He will candidly tell us both the good and the bad,” declares one investor. Last October, Ward highlighted his overweight recommendation on Alliance Holdings GP, a Tulsa, Oklahoma–based limited partnership formed to own and control Alliance Resource Management, the managing general partner of Alliance Resource Partners, a diversified producer and marketer of coal to major U.S. utilities and industrial users. Ward thought the company’s risk-reward profile was very attractive, given his projection that a doubling of the coal-mining partnership’s cash distributions would take place over the next four years. The stock skyrocketed 88.9 percent, from $20.40 to $38.54, through August and outpaced the sector by 77.3 percentage points.
