The buy side says: “Working with Loredana Serra is a privilege.”

Vaulting from runner-up to first place is the Morgan Stanley trio guided by Loredana Serra, who also leads the No. 2 team in Food & Beverages. Serra, 48, earned an MBA from Harvard University in 1987 and joined the firm 16 years ago from J.P. Morgan, where she worked in the corporate finance department. In December 2009 the New York–based team upgraded Lojas Renner from neutral to overweight, at R35.82, telling clients to expect a surge in profits and earnings at the Brazilian department store chain, thanks to an anticipated rise in consumer spending. The stock had skyrocketed to R58.96 by late July, a whopping 64.6 percent gain that beat the sector by 58.5 percentage points. Serra “is able to think outside the box and come out with interesting proprietary analyses,” says one portfolio manager. “She is very accessible and always willing to share her ideas — definitely one of the strongest sell-side analysts covering the Latin American consumer space.”
