Edward Garlich Jr. leads the 18-member Concept Capital troupe up one notch to second place. In December the New York–based analysts predicted that the Federal Communications Commission would approve a request by the Motion Picture Association of America to allow studios to transmit films via cable or satellite into viewers’s homes at the same time that the movies were showing in theaters, effectively giving the studios a new means of access to the home viewership market ahead of a film’s DVD or Blu-ray release, but undermining the revenues of theater chains such as Carmike Cinemas of Columbus, Georgia; Cinemark Holdings, which is headquartered in Plano, Texas; and Knoxville, Tennessee–based Regal Entertainment Group. The FCC approved the request in May, and by late August, Carmike’s stock had plummeted 50.8 percent, Cinemark’s was down 16.8 percent, and Regal’s had plunged 21.4 percent. Investors commend the Concept Capital analysts for their ability to cut to the Washington chase across a broad swath of issues. “They did a great job of giving me the bare essence in one- or two-page briefings for both financial services and health care legislation that ran 2,000-plus pages — no one in their right mind can wade through all that,” notes one appreciative client.
