Felipe Mattar & team Barclays Capital
The buy side says: “Felipe Mattar looks at the big picture without losing sight of the details.”
Last year, as a solo analyst with Citi, Felipe Mattar finished in third place. This year the São Paulo–based analyst leads the Barclays Capital trio all the way to No. 1. According to one satisfied client, these researchers “deeply understand all industry drivers, from politics and complex regulations to event-driven calls.”
The team urged investors to buy Brazil’s Cía. Paranaense de Energia in August 2009, at R27.79, on the strength of the state-owned electricity distributor’s growth prospects. Through July the stock had sizzled up 26.8 percent, to R35.25, and outpaced the sector by 14.1 percentage points.
Mattar, 35, earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at the Universidade de São Paulo in 1998 and worked as a utilities analyst at Merrill Lynch, Deutsche Bank and Citi before joining BarCap in June 2009.
