Carlos de Alba, described by one supporter as a “hardworking guy who writes a lot about new issues,” guides Morgan Stanley’s three-member team from runner-up all the way to second place.

The New York–based team upgraded Grupo México from neutral to overweight in May 18 2009, at R11.55, on the belief that the company would win its battle to retain control of bankrupt subsidiary Asarco; it did.

In March, after the stock had skyrocketed 179.6 percent, to R32.29, and beat the sector by 123.2 percentage points, the team downgraded it to hold, on valuation. Since then the stock gained just 4.2 percent, through July.
