Bank of New York Mellon Corp. is beefing up its back office, and Jim McEleney is moving to India to oversee the effort. He will be stationed in Pune, about 60 miles from Mumbai, where BNY Mellon in March opened its third facility to cope with expanded back-office and IT operations, the 43-year-old McEleney tells II. The bank, which has $20.7 trillion in assets under custody globally, has just under 4,000 staffers in India, including more than 2,000 IT professionals.

McEleney, the new CEO of the bank’s IT operations in India, began his career with the bank 17 years ago and has spent the bulk of it in the U.S. In Pune, McEleney will oversee the team that provides back-office support for asset management, wealth management, financial markets and treasury services. “This is clear evidence of our commitment and confidence in India,” he says. McEleney was previously managing director for the bank’s global wealth management and family office services in Europe.
