Ian Harwood missed the market action so much that he emerged from quasi-retirement to become chief economist for Evolution Securities, a London-based small- and midcap investment bank.

Last month the 56-year-old, who from 1994 to 2008 was Dresdner Kleinwort’s chief economist and who led the winning team in Economics/Developed European Markets on Institutional Investor’s 2008 All-Europe Research Team, assumed the role just as Evolution announced that it would grow its securities business by lifting 45 key staff from Dresdner. German insurer Allianz sold Dresdner to Commerzbank in September 2008.

“This is a fascinating time in the global markets, and I didn’t want to miss it,” Harwood says. Under Harwood’s direction the team at Dresdner finished in either second or third place in Institutional Investor’s rankings every year from 2003 through 2007 before landing in the winner’s circle last year.
