When Michael Litt established Darien, Connecticut–based multistrategy hedge fund firm Arrowhawk Capital Management as CIO in 2008, one of his co-founders, Olav Refvik, insisted that they hire Jennifer Fan, who had worked with Refvik as a trader in the global oil liquids group at Morgan Stanley.
Fan, 28, had gained a reputation as someone who could trade anything, from egg futures to the spread between jet fuel and heating oil. Litt was impressed, and Fan — who had graduated from New York University’s Stern School of Business with BS degrees in finance and statistics, and operational research at 19 — joined Arrowhawk in the summer of 2009. She has more than lived up to her high billing. In addition to making a significant contribution to the investment return of the firm’s multistrategy fund, Fan is the sole portfolio manager for a $170 million commodities strategies fund.
