Some hedge fund managers dream of being rock stars. Plenty of rock stars would like to be as rich as the most successful hedge fund managers. Scott Sinclair, 42, co-founder of New York–based hedge fund firm Cascabel Management, has seen the best of both worlds. A University of Virginia graduate, Sinclair was among the investing talent hired by Julian Robertson Jr. at Tiger Management Corp., joining the storied firm in 1991. For a time he was based in Tokyo, covering consumer stocks and East Asian markets. He returned to New York in 1997 and took over primary responsibilities for Tiger’s media and entertainment investments.

In 1999, Sinclair, who has an MBA from Stanford University, left the investment world to tour full-time with his band, Freeloader. But he never strayed far from the Tiger family, serving as co-chairman of the Tiger Foundation, the philanthropic organization set up by Robertson to encourage giving across the Tiger network, from 2004 to 2008. He returned to investing in 2008, when he and Laurence Chang co-founded Cascabel, a long-short equity hedge fund focused on global value investing, with seed money from Robertson.
