Institutional investors seemed to be bottom-feeding the broad financials group at the end of the third quarter, accounting for six of the 15 most overweight stocks on September 30. They include three real estate investment trusts (REITs), according to a quarterly analysis of regulatory filings by the quantitative research team at Credit Suisse Securities.
Amazon.com, Inc., UnitedHealth Group, V F Corp., Precision Castparts, and Allergan Inc. were new additions to the top 15 list at the end of the third quarter.
An active weight is taken when the weight of a stock within the aggregate institutional portfolio differs from the weighting of the stock in the S&P 500, Credit Suisse explains. Overweighted stocks have a greater weight in the institutional portfolio than in the S&P 500 benchmark.
Interestingly, not one stock appeared on both the list of issues most overweight by institutions as well as hedge funds.
