When Greg Lippmann, co-founder of New York–based LibreMax Capital, started his firm’s relative value mortgage hedge fund last October, it is fair to say there were more than a few eyes upon him. Lippmann, 42, had shot to fame as the Deutsche Bank asset-backed-mortgage trader who, beginning in early 2006, had been advising clients and his own bank to short the subprime mortgage market. After the events of 2007 and 2008, that advice looks incredibly prescient.
Deutsche made almost $2 billion from Lippmann’s trade in 2007. But when LibreMax launched, some investors still questioned Lippmann’s ability to manage money and whether he was a one-trade wonder. So far he is easily defying the skeptics and winning converts. His firm has $650 million in assets, and its flagship hedge fund is up 6 percent for the year through the end of May. Not bad for a Wall Street trader who grew up in suburban Westchester County, New York, and still rides the subway to work.
