European banks need to remove toxic assets from their balance sheets or risk sending the region into a recession, warns Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics. Weinberg says the European Central Bank could help increase lending by taking on bad assets. Currently lending to the private sector has remained tight, which could hamper growth and put additional strain on the European Financial Stability Facility, which was created to help countries with unsustainable debt burdens.
