Stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) saw a decline of 4.6 percent in shorting in the later half of September relative to the previous two-week period, The Wall Street Journal reports. Semimonthly data showed short interest on the exchange was down to 14.95 billion shares, from 15.67 billion in the previous period. Short interest on NYSE, part of NYSE Euronext, was 3.9 percent of the total outstanding shares as on September 30. Short interest in stocks listed on the Nasdaq OMX Group’s Nasdaq exchange also dropped 2.1 percent to 7.34 billion shares in the same period.
