On Year to Date Tally, Bank of America Merrill Lynch Is No. 1

The firm has amassed nearly twice as many sector championships as any of its competitors.

When the 40 positions it captures on Institutional Investor’s 2016 All-America Fixed-Income Research Team are added to the results of analyst surveys published earlier this year, Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s aggregated total jumps to 145. That’s more than enough for the firm to retain the top spot on our Global Research Leaders: Year to Date roster.

J.P. Morgan, which leads the All-America Fixed-Income Research Team for a seventh consecutive year, remains in second place overall, with 134 spots. These two are only firms to have amassed triple-digit totals thus far this year. In third place, with 88 positions, is Morgan Stanley, followed by Deutsche Bank, with 82. Citi rounds out the top five, with 78 spots.

A total of 60 firms are represented in the results of these six surveys. Click on Global Research Leaders: Year to Date in the navigation table at right to view the full list.

Among the highlights of the aggregated results:

• Bank of America Merrill Lynch analysts and teams have turned in 47 sector-topping appearances — far more than any other firm’s. Morgan Stanley is No. 2 when research providers are measured by this metric, with 25, followed by J.P. Morgan, with 23.

• J.P. Morgan is home to the highest number of runners-up, with 49, just ahead of Citi, which has 45.

• A total of 30 firms have earned at least one first-place position thus far this year.

• Where coverage of developed markets only is concerned, J.P. Morgan is the champion, with 101 spots. Bank of America Merrill Lynch ranks second, with 95, and Barclays third, with 60.

• The lineup is very different when only emerging-markets research is considered. Bank of America Merrill Lynch reigns supreme, with 50 positions, followed by Morgan Stanley, with 43, and UBS, with 38.

II’s Global Research Leaders: Year to Date ranking will be updated on August 2, when the results of the 2016 Latin America Research Team will be announced.
