Mark Gurevich
Ropes & Gray
Not many people can say they have chemistry with activist investors. For Mark Gurevich, however, it’s in his background. Now a partner at the New York office of international law firm Ropes & Gray, Gurevich, 38, earned an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before heading to Harvard Law School with plans to specialize in patent law, although he found his true calling on the negotiation side of the business.
Changing his academic focus to corporate law, Gurevich got his start at Ropes as a summer associate in 2003. After graduating with his JD in 2004, he joined the firm full-time; over the past 12 years, he has carved out a niche as an in-house math whiz. When hedge fund and other private firms have questions about fee mechanisms, expense allocations or the numbers in a contract, they call on Gurevich to make sense of it all. His other roles include advising institutional investors and a seed fund platform on their allocations to third-party hedge fund managers. Gurevich can translate more than deals between the buy and sell sides: He grew up with multiple perspectives on life. At age 15 he had to learn to navigate public high school in suburban Chicago after emigrating from his native Moscow.
