Corvil

Founded in 2000, Corvil grew up supporting financial markets’ adoption of ever-faster automated trading: Banks, brokerages and exchanges rely on Corvil’s performance-monitoring solutions to minimize latency on their networks. But taking note of the staggering growth of all sorts of data — and the demand for analytical capabilities — CEO Donal Byrne says latency management is but a leading indicator of what the Dublin-based company’s technology can accomplish. “Every financial business today is a data business,” says Byrne, who worked in Silicon Valley in the 1990s, joined Corvil as nonexecutive chairman in 2000 and became CEO in 2002. “The winners will succeed based on the speed at which they can access and operationalize their data, the security of their data and their ability to govern data.” With Byrne looking at growth opportunities in other data-intensive industries, such as advertising and energy, Corvil last July introduced the Streaming Analytics Platform, which collects information from across an enterprise and routes it in real time into systems designed to analyze it and produce useful insights. “Most monitoring systems today focus on what you know about rather than what you don’t know,” Byrne, 49, contends. “The one place you can go to find out what you don’t know is the data that’s being transmitted across the network. Rather than focusing on risk, the point is to focus on data.” Last year also saw Corvil expand its customer network to include the Colombian Securities Exchange, Nasdaq Stock Market and Tokyo Stock Exchange, which is using CorvilClear for real-time data exchange.
