After headlining this roster for the past six years, Andrew Kaplowitz tumbles to third place. The 42-year-old researcher left Barclays in the spring and signed on at the end of July with Citi. Despite his decline in the ranking, ”you can’t do complete [engineering and construction] research without talking to Andy,” insists one loyalist. Another fund manager observes that “Andy’s vast experience and intelligence make him always ahead of the curve in this extremely cyclical industry.” These clients may be dismayed to learn that Kaplowitz will follow U.S. multi-industry equities at his new firm. At Barclays the analyst reported on nine U.S. engineering and construction companies, plus ten machinery names. In this space he preferred Aecom of Los Angeles, hiking his rating on the architecture and engineering consulting firm from equal weight to overweight in January. Demand for nonresidential construction was strengthening, he noted, particularly from government entities. By April, when Kaplowitz closed the call in preparation for his departure from Barclays, the shares had advanced 8.4 percent, to $32.76, eclipsing the sector’s gain by 2.7 percentage points.
