Dan Mathisson
Head of Execution andTrading, U.S. Equities
Credit Suisse
Last year: 9
Automated trading has been Dan Mathisson’s claim to fame since 2001, when, after leaving D.E. Shaw Group, he built Credit Suisse Advanced Execution Services into Wall Street’s premier provider of algorithmic strategies. The AES-connected dark pool Crossfinder, introduced in 2004, also became an industry pacesetter. In 2012, Mathisson, who is based in New York, was promoted from AES to become head of execution and trading for U.S. equities. Overseeing a wider spectrum of client and trading activities presents more opportunities for applying technological innovation. A case in point: Turbo, a block-trading tool that resulted from a yearlong series of conversations between Mathisson and institutional clients to assess how to meet large-order needs in a straightforward, all-encompassing way. Launched last October, Turbo has attracted nearly 500 clients so far. Mathisson, 44, says the offering melds “quantitative hedging techniques from [exchange-traded funds] and programs, connectivity and logistics from the electronic side and relationships and capital commitment from the block side.” He calls it “the first offering on the Street that truly combines high touch and low touch and truly combines agency and principal in a seamless way.”
