Retaining the third-place position he first captured last year is Deutsche Bank Securities analyst William Schmitz. “Bill is an old-school, ‘publish-or-perish’ analyst,” compliments one investor. “His reports are best-in-class. They’re thoughtful, detailed and even funny.” Schmitz, who works out of Greenwich, Connecticut, recommended in January that investors buy Provo, Utah–based Nu Skin Enterprises, a developer and distributer of antiaging products. “The sales growth at Nu Skin was underappreciated given its innovation pipeline,” he contends. Good call. By the end of August, the shares had rocketed 128.6 percent, from $36.62 to $83.71, and outdistanced the sector by 116.4 percentage points. “Bill has great relationships in this industry, does a good job drilling down to the big drivers for the companies. And it doesn’t hurt that he writes about perfume and diapers with a great sense of humor,” says another money manager. — Katie Gilbert
