< Back to the Hedge Fund Rising Stars
Nehal Chopra is at the top of the class. In 2011, Julian Robertson Jr. opened his New York hedge fund firm Tiger Management Corp. to new capital with the Tiger Accelerator fund. This vehicle raised about $450 million to help finance six of the so-called Tiger Seeds, the hedge funds that Robertson has backed since his firm stopped taking outside money in 2000. Among that elite group: Chopra and her New York–based Ratan Capital Management, which runs a long-short equity fund. Chopra, 33, is used to leading the pack. At the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, she earned an undergraduate degree and an MBA by age 21. While an undergrad she interned at Goldman Sachs Group, where she was part of the bank’s prestigious submatriculation program. After working in investment banking at UBS and Lehman Brothers Holdings, Chopra joined hedge fund firms Ramius Capital Group and Balyasny Asset Management before launching Ratan on the Tiger platform in 2009. Her fund returned 29 percent in 2012, finishing the year with about $160 million in assets. |
