After two years as a runner-up, Morgan Stanley’s Simon Lee rises to the third tier, impressing investors with his “energetic attention to wind and solar power,” as one money manager puts it. Following 11 companies, Lee also keeps tabs on 11 more names with colleagues. Although he declines to discuss specific stock recommendations, he reports that he championed the renewable-energy subsector last December, based partly on the government’s new environmental emphasis. This “proved to be a timely call,” he says. “Stocks in that segment have outperformed conventional energy utilities in 2013.” The researcher remains bullish about the segment and on clean power. “Simon is the first one in the market to highlight key policy changes on China’s renewables space,” cheers another client, “including the renewables portfolio standard and [value-added tax] rebate, which added value to my investment analysis.” — Ben Mattlin
