After nearly 16 years at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, chief investment officer Jay Flaherty is retiring.
Named CIO in 2013, Flaherty has spent much of his career working for the $3.7 billion foundation. As investment chief he led a team of nine, and the foundation grew by more than $1 billion under his tenure.
“The Mott Foundation has been fortunate to have Jay Flaherty’s wisdom and steady hand guiding our investment team since 2007, and we wish him a happy and fulfilling retirement,” Ridgway White, president and CEO of the foundation, said via email.
Flaherty’s first role after joining the Mott Foundation in 2007 was managing the organization’s hedge fund portfolio and risk management activities. He later added responsibilities including managing private equity and asset allocation strategies.
Prior to joining Mott, Flaherty worked for investment advisory firms Richards & Tierney and Ennis Knupp & Associates in Chicago. In his early career, Flaherty worked as a financial analyst and reliability statistician.
“Although Jay’s shoes will be tough to fill, we’re confident we’ll be able to bring on a forward-looking chief investment officer who’s equally passionate about continuing to build a high-performing investment portfolio and supporting Mott’s efforts to promote a just, equitable, and sustainable society,” White added.
Now, the search for the foundation’s next CIO begins. David Barrett Partners’ Elizabeth Havens is acting as a recruiter for this role.
