These Are the Winners of the 2022 Hedge Fund Industry Awards

Finalists including Elliott Management Corp., the University of Maryland, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation left Wednesday’s ceremony with awards.

This year’s top hedge fund manager for institutional investors is Elliott Management Corp.

The hedge fund firm headed by Paul Singer took home the award for Institutional Hedge Fund Manager of the Year at Institutional Investor’s 19th annual Hedge Fund Industry Awards, held Wednesday at the Mandarin Oriental in New York. Finalists in 19 other categories — including 9 allocator and consultant categories and 10 hedge fund categories — also received awards over the course of the evening.

Two investors were honored for their accomplishments throughout their investing careers. Christopher Hohn, founder of TCI Fund Management, was presented with the 2022 Hedge Fund Lifetime Achievement Award, while Jon Glidden, managing director of pensions at Delta Airlines, was presented with the Allocator Lifetime Achievement Award.

Several other allocators also took home awards, including the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which won Foundation of the Year. The University of Maryland’s investment office, spearheaded by chief investment officer Sam Gallo, received recognition as the Endowment of the Year.

Public Plan of the Year was awarded to the South Carolina Retirement System Investment Committee, while Corporate/Insurance Plan of the Year went to the United Parcel Service.

The Ilitch Family Office won Family Office of the Year, Cleveland Clinic was named Health Care System of the Year, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority received an award for Sovereign Wealth Fund of the Year.

Aon was named Outsourced Investor of the Year, while the Hedge Fund Consultant of the Year was Albourne.

In the hedge fund categories, GoldenTree Asset Management took home the award for Credit-Focused Hedge Fund Manager of the Year. Fir Tree Partners was awarded Event-Driven Hedge Fund Manager of the Year, while Systematica Investments was deemed the Quantitative Hedge Fund Manager of the Year.

Equity-Focused Hedge Fund Manager of the Year went to Sachem Head Capital Management, and Multistrategy Hedge Fund Manager of the Year was awarded to Citadel.

The award for Emerging Hedge Fund Manager of the Year went to Engine No.1, which made its debut with a successful activist campaign against Exxon Mobil.

TCI Fund Management won Activist Hedge Fund Manager of the Year, and The D.E. Shaw Group was named the Macro Hedge Fund Manager of the Year.

The Most Innovative Hedge Fund Manager of the Year was Marshall Wace.

II also recognized ten Hedge Fund Rising Stars: Adrienne Clough (DUMAC), Andrew Cohen (Difesa Capital Management), Michael Englander (Greenland Capital Management), Ziang Fang (Man Numeric), Marshall Hendler (Optima Asset Management), Yan Kvitko (CPP Investments), Ryan Packard (Hiddenite Capital Partners), Alex Schiller (Bridgewater Associates), Michael Simanovsky (Conversant Capital), and John Wolff (Insight Partners).
